CHAPTER TWELVE

“After these long years, an old hermit came to me with the miserable news of what happened to my dear Fredrich. It is as I suspected. My enemies found him and killed him. How long he was alive and tortured mind and body before they finally ended his life, I do not know.

“I am not sad to learn he died since I’ve long known it to be true. I am relieved to know he found heaven eventually but sorrow-filled that he never knew he had a son.

“The Blackwoods will live on, and I will ensure the Grimoire is always faithful to their blood. To my blood as well.”

—Excerpt of a letter sent by Alia Fiorina to a fellow coven witch shortly before her death

After leaving the coven estate, having Thea’s car pulled out of the mud, and returning home, the witch and her extra-dimensional entity roommate were famished and exhausted. Thea had hardly shoved down a fast food burger before she passed out on top of her made bed.

She awoke to find it still dark outside and glanced at her clock. It was three in the morning. A soft snoring nearby told her Kira had fallen asleep on the living room sofa. The previous day’s events flooded Thea’s mind, and she rose, wondering if she had remembered to lock the door before falling into bed.

She tiptoed past a sleeping Kira in the living room and found the door slightly ajar. Good thing no one decided to rob us tonight, she thought as she went to shut the door. When she reached it, Thea noticed something leaning against the door frame. She bent and saw it was a folded piece of paper.

A familiar scent of jasmine and something dark and earthy hit her nose from the paper. Thea’s heart skipped a beat. She recognized it as the scent of Mother Folsom’s favorite perfume, which she’d been wearing ever since Thea met her seventeen years ago.

Had Mother Folsom brought this while she was asleep? It was more disconcerting to know the former coven Mother had slipped by in the middle of the night instead of speaking to Thea directly. She unfolded the paper to find Mother Folsom’s elegant handwriting scrawled across it in a brief message.

Time is almost up, Theadora. I hope you have made your decision.

MF

Is that supposed to stand for Mother Folsom, Michelle Folsom, or Motherfucker? Thea thought, closing the door louder than she intended. After remembering Kira was asleep, she cringed. She turned to find her friend still sound in slumber.

Thea’s mind raced with the possibilities of when and where Mother Folsom might decide to show herself. Of all times, it has to be now! Her irritation built. Thea ripped the letter to pieces and threw it in a garbage can on the way back to her bedroom. She intended to climb back into bed but halted inside her room. It wouldn’t matter if Mother Folsom would return any moment now. Thea wouldn’t get any more sleep.

The second she thought this, her phone rang.
