Speaking of which, I was feeling quite peckish, so I magicked myself over to Cuppy C where both of the twins were behind the counter. Looking remarkably pleased with themselves.

“Hi, you two. Can I get—”

“Stop right there.” Pearl held out her hand in a halt gesture.

“Don’t mess about. I’m hungry.”

“Then take a seat at the table.”

“But I haven’t told you what I want yet.”

“No need,” Amber said. “Just use the app.”

I glanced around the room and realised that every table had a small gizmo on it.

“What are those?”

“They’re our app.”

“They look like remote controls.”

“Go and try it.”

“Okay.” I sighed.

Why did life have to be this complicated? I took a seat at the nearest table and picked up the little gizmo.

“Good, isn’t it?” Pearl said.

“Why can’t I just tell you what I want?”

“Use the app.”

Why they insisted on calling it an app I had no idea, but if I was ever going to get something to eat, I would have to play along with their crazy scheme. The gizmo’s screen displayed the Cuppy C menu, broken down into a number of categories: Drinks, Hot snacks, and Cakes and Buns. I clicked on Drinks, and then selected a caramel latte. Next, I went into the Cakes and Buns menu and tried to select a blueberry muffin, but the option was greyed out and marked Out of Stock. Somewhat disappointed, I selected a raspberry muffin instead. Next, I clicked on the basket, checked my order, and pressed confirm. Immediately, a bell rang behind the counter, and Pearl tore off the resultant printout.

“See.” She beamed. “Brilliant, isn’t it?”

To be fair, it had worked way better than I’d expected, but I believed that I’d identified one small issue.

“What about the payment?”

“We collect the money when we bring it over.”

“It would be better if you could pay via the—err—this thing.”

“The supplier has promised payments will be included in the next upgrade.”

The twins were so busy congratulating one another that something rather important seemed to have slipped their minds.

I cleared my throat to get their attention. “You seem to have forgotten something?”

“What?” Amber said. “The app is perfect.”

“My order.”

“Oh yeah.” She laughed. “Sorry. Coming right up.”

The twins left one of their assistants in charge of the counter, and both came to join me at the table.

“Be honest, Jill,” Amber said. “You didn’t think the app would work, did you?”

“No, I didn’t, and I still don’t understand how it does without the internet.”

“It’s cutting-edge technology and we’re one of the first establishments to have it. Once word gets around, this place is going to be packed all day, every day.”

“We’ll see.” I took a bite of the muffin.

“Have you always been so cynical and pessimistic?” Pearl said.

“Yes, and it’s served me well so far.”

“I’m not sure you should be eating that muffin,” Amber said.

“Why not? After the morning I’ve had, I deserve it.”

“Thirteen miles is a long way.” She grinned. “You’ll need to be in tip-top shape.”

“I take it you’ve heard about the half-marathon.”

“Grandma was in here earlier.” Pearl pointed to the noticeboard, and for the first time, I spotted the poster.
