Instead of having a relaxing time to myself, I spent the rest of the evening running over in my mind what Grandma had said. How had all this happened so quickly? It seemed like only yesterday that I’d told Florence she was a witch and showed her a few spells. Now, she was developing her own spells and I was being advised to allow her to attend CASS.

It didn’t get any better when I went to bed because my mind was so active, I found it almost impossible to sleep. On the few occasions that I did manage to nod off for a few minutes, I dreamed of Florence being chased around CASS by a pouchfeeder.

“You look dreadful,” Wanda said the next morning when I took my bowl of cereal through to the lounge.

“I didn’t sleep very well.”

“What’s that you’re eating?” Mabel said.

“Strawberrycandy Pops.”

“There’s no wonder you don’t look well. You should try eating something healthy like muesli.”

“Don’t you start. I’m perfectly okay. I just have a lot on my mind.”

“Are you worried about Florence going to CASS?” Wanda asked.

“How do you know about that?”

“We were right here in the room when your grandmother was talking to you last night.”

“Still, you shouldn’t have been listening.”

“If you want my advice, I—”

“I don’t want your advice.”

“Charming. I was going to say you should follow your gut instinct. You’re her mother and you know what’s best for your child.”

“Right. Sorry, I shouldn’t have snapped at you.”

“That’s okay, but would you mind doing me a favour?”

“What’s that?”

“Go and eat that awful cereal in the kitchen. Just the smell of it is turning my stomach.”
