I retraced Robert Warne’s footsteps until I reached the house where I’d seen him let himself inside. I’d only seen the row of houses in black and white on CCTV, so the pastel coloured walls and doors came as something of a surprise. I rang the doorbell of number ten, and when there was no answer, I hammered on the door. There was still no response and no sign of movement inside. That didn’t necessarily mean the house was empty because if Robert Warne had faked his own kidnapping, he would no doubt be cautious about opening the door.

To get to the rear of the property, I had to walk to the end of the row of houses, and then duck down the narrow alleyway that ran behind them. I knocked on the back door, but again with no response. On a whim, I took a look through the back window.

Lying on the tiled kitchen floor was a man’s body.

Moments later, with the aid of the ‘power’ spell, I’d gained access to the property. The man lying on the floor was obviously dead, and the blood on his head and on the floor-tiles was clearly fresh. Was whoever did it still in the house? I did a quick check of all the rooms, but there was no sign of anyone, so I called the police.
