Chapter 8

Stepping out of a crack in the world into an empty alleyway in Toronto with the others, Addie felt wind rushing in her ears.

The world was cooler here, and the air had a different feel to it than it had back in Athensville. It was heavier, full of city stuff like exhaust and dust and all kinds of smells that she would rather not identify. Addie had never liked cities, although she’d been in lots of them before. It was the press of people all around that she didn’t like, and the sense that everything was in a rush, even time itself. She much preferred life in her little New England town. Crazy as it might be, full of danger as it might be, it was still where her heart belonged.

“Okay, so,” Philly said, waving a hand at the end of the alley. “Turn right on the street out there, and the place where Bruce Bennett is getting food ready for that casting party is three places up on this side. All right. Me and Alan are going to take our leave from you now. Remember to whistle for us when you need us.”

Then he and Alan were just gone, and air rushed into the space they no longer occupied, stirring grimy dirt from the alley into a little tornado.

Lucian coughed and waved the gritty air away from him. “Well. They sure know how to make an exit. I’ll let you take the lead with Bennett, all right? You’ve got the prior history with the guy.”

She looked at him in surprise. “You’re not going to pull rank on me, or whatever? Tell me you’re the cop, and I should stay in my lane?”

Lucian stuffed his hands in his pocket. “Is that really how you see me now?”

Actually, yes it was. She pursed her lips at him in a scathing rebuke. “Can you blame me? Maybe if you’d talked to me at all over the last week to explain yourself, then my opinion now wouldn’t be based on the last thing you said to me.”

He winced, because he remembered those careless words of his at the wedding as much as she did. “Yeah. The whole not calling thing…I know that was wrong. I knew it was wrong, I just didn’t know how to go back and fix it. The more time lapsed, the worse I thought it would sound if I came out of the cold and called you, or whatever.”

“You could have reached out to me any time. It would have been fine.”

“I was giving you space.” He raised his hands apologetically when he saw her expression harden. “I know how that sounds, believe me I do. But it’s true. I know I hurt you. That was never my intention, Addie. Really it was not. I was trying to be a good friend, at least, and give you time to heal. I guess I even screwed that up, didn’t I?”

She couldn’t form an answer for him. Those words, that apology, were totally unexpected.
