My father’s lovely estate on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides was where we took a fortnight’s refuge from the coven in Edinburgh and began our search for the missing Standing Stone of Callanish.

Isle of Lewis has the fifth-most beautiful beach in the world. Unfortunately, a near-constant freezing gray rain and extreme winds made going there very unappealing at this time of year.

The butler received us in an entryway that showed off a grand stairway. The walls were covered with portraits and paintings of scenic landscapes and horses. There was also a suit of armor and a sword in a glass case.

“Welcome, Miss Chambers and friends. My name is Mordecai Digby,” the butler introduced himself once we were inside. “If you need anything during your stay, just tell me or my wife, Glynnis.”

“Thank you, Mr. Digby.” I introduced everyone around as he gathered our coats.

He apologized, “I’m so sorry about the van not starting. A spark plug is missing. Some malicious mischief, but I’ll get it replaced in the morning.”

“Sounds like sabotage,” Fergie said. “Shall I look into it for you?”

“No, thank you. It’s just our resident fairies making a statement about being relocated from the bedchambers into the attics for the duration of your visit.”

Siobhan shifted Bonnie to her other arm. “I hope they won’t be too put out at goblins taking up some of their rooms.”

“All are welcome here,” Mr. Digby said.

“Thank you,” Luc said graciously.

“It’s our pleasure.” Mr. Digby paused. “It’s late and you must all be quite tired.”

Siobhan nodded and the baby fussed.

Mr. Digby said, “Everyone except Miss Chambers, I will see you to your rooms upstairs so you can get settled in. I’ll have Mrs. Digby bring you each a light supper.”

“Thank you,” Fergie said.

Mr. Digby nodded at me. “Your father is waiting for you in the library, just through those double doors.” He swept his hand in a gesture.

My entourage made their way up the staircase behind Mr. Digby, who was apparently nonplussed by fairies in the attics.

My heart pounded as I walked toward the library and knocked on one of the carved double doors.

“Come in, Elle,” called a pleasant, deep voice.

I turned the knob and opened the library door.

A fire crackled in the massive fireplace of my father’s beautiful manor home. I noticed that he’d liberally decorated with the Finnegan tartan as if he were doing product placement.

I saw him silhouetted as he stood warming his back by the leaping flames in the huge hearth.

“Hello,” I said, feeling quite unsure of myself.

“Elle, at long last, we meet. Don’t be shy. Come here.”

I walked toward the muscled, sturdy man who had turned around and opened his arms to me. I used my enchantress skills to feel out his emotions. I could feel him doing the same with his enchanter skills.

My father had an unlined, clean-shaven face, yet his eyes were full of wisdom, as if he were ancient and knowing.

After a long embrace, I gently backed out of his arms and said,
