Chapter 25

One Thousand and One Nights

Div awoke from a dream with Baihu in the spirit realm. A gentle smile spread across his face as he softly touched his lips, thinking about their kiss— unable to deny how much he craved another.

He snuck out of Mohan’s bed when the older man fell asleep after mumbling to himself in front of his mirror. He glanced back, infuriated about the mystical circlet upon his brow that he couldn’t remove.

Div’s heart raced as he clutched the door handle and carefully closed it. There wouldn’t be much time to meet with the rebellion's leader. He tightened the yellow silk robe belt and steeled his nerves.

Baihu… Div narrowed his determined gaze, unable to ignore the fear, turning his legs into jelly. I’ll find you. I promise. He breathed deeply and pressed his bare feet against the cold marble floor before beginning his mission.

Div hurried down the busy corridor, glimpsing the familiar faces of the people he had seen in the palace for years yet never would have guessed possibly harbored secrets of rebellion. He had wished to witness Mohan’s downfall for years, and now the opportunity was within his grasp.

Memories of Baihu’s courage and gentle nature inspired Div. He stopped atop the staircase leading to the servants’ quarters, balling his hands into fists. It wouldn't raise too many red flags even if Mohan caught him in such a place.

Here goes… Div dashed down the long stairwell, a glow with candlelight.

Various faces of all the people he had ever seen in the palace over the years flashed through his mind. Who could it be?

The leader of an active rebellion would no doubt have inside information and gain the trust of their target to move in close enough to strike. Countless questions filled Div’s mind. However, at the forefront, he wondered if the rebellion planned to kill Mohan or simply imprison him for the rest of his life.

Div paused at the bottom of the steps and glanced toward the room where he met Baihu before they headed into the party.

He smiled, still enamored by the memory of the other man’s fancy costume and beautiful eyes framed by his white and blue mask.

After discovering the message carved into his paintbrush, Div closed his eyes and pictured the small piece of parchment he found secured to the back of the canvas. However, he had destroyed both to avoid Mohan discovering the evidence, but not before memorizing where he was told to meet the mysterious person behind the invitation.

Div froze and anxiously chewed on the tip of his thumbnail. He glimpsed back toward the stairs, expecting Mohan to appear at any moment. A chill ran down his spine when he recalled the other man’s advances and declarations of love. Both disturbing realities drove him toward the room at the far end of the hallway.

“Hello?” Div stepped into the candlelit room—void of any furnishings except a tall wooden bookcase filled with leather-bound volumes. Shivers traveled through his feet and spine as he strode across the cold stone floor to the literature.
