CHAPTER 25
Evangelia
With only my racing heartbeat for company, I sped along the winding tunnels of the cave, not stopping for breath despite my lungs screaming at me. Every turn I took forced me deeper into its belly as I became more and more lost.
I couldnât remember how long we had been separated, or even when or how or why my mates werenât here. All I knew was the need to run, lest the shadows at my heels consume me. I took a sharp left, and suddenly, the walls were no longer jagged rock, but row upon row of trees, just like those found in the Fading Vale.
This I knew. This I was comfortable with. This I had done before.
Navigating crisscrossing tree roots. Ducking under broken branches. Swerving around hanging moss as it brushed against my cheeks.
Running from a faceless threat.
Forever running, only slowing once we put enough distance between our friends and foes. Not stopping until we found somewhere new to call home. Albeit briefly.
Only that wasnât right.
That wasnât my life anymore. We didn't run. We fought.
A quick glance over my shoulder confirmed the shadows hadnât relented. But they never would. So instead, I stopped dead, whirling around to face them, and lifted my chin in challenge. âIâm done running,â I gritted.
The shadows morphed together into a giant male. And I knew instinctively the bulges at his shoulders and sword at his waist were horde issued uniform, despite the silhouette holding no real details.
I braced myself, ready for his attack. Ready for pain. Ready to fight him until one of us lost. But an attack never came. Instead, he swung his head back and cackled. The eerie laugh stretched on and on, growing louder and louder until it reached an unbearable crescendo.
My hands flew up to protect my ears from the ringing bellows, but it did nothing to shield them from the noise. My legs buckled, and I fell to my knees, closing my eyes and gritting my teeth. I had no idea how much time passed but when the ear-splitting shrieks became more distant, I opened my eyes to find I was curled up tightly in a ball on the floor.
The trees around me were no more. Below me was neither a stone path, nor the forest underbrush, but a rich red carpet. A chilling sense of déjà vu swept over me. I was in the castle throne room. But the foreboding familiarity wasnât from recognizing the throne or decor, but from the scene itself.
From the fae in the room with me. To the papers rustling in the hands of the royal advisors and the sneer in Elikaiâs voice as he chastised Kane for arriving late. The last time the prophecy had been read, Iâd watched while concealed inside a secret nook, spying. Now, I was front and center, under the direct scrutiny of all eyes in the room.
My hands fidgeted, grabbing for the rings at my fingers. But they were gone. My body began to tremble as fear enveloped me.
