On screen six, the Northern Lights flickered green and yellow. Harp lay on top of a flatcar stacked with lumber, the two-by-sixes lashed together and marked Northern Michigan Lumber. Above, the sky opened and closed, a magic show.

The track he rode was strong, aged, worn, broken, sturdy, hard, and cold—one part of a larger track, a mainline that crossed the state like stitchery, cutting a scar across the land. On it, train cars mixed and turned, a shuffle of freight that was never at rest. And there was always a train on the way.

Slater didn’t need the monitors to remember Lane. All he had to do was close his eyes and he was back inside the Jeep, holding her while the night sky flashed yellow, green, and pink.

You’re looking for a safe place, she told him between kisses. But there isn’t any. It’s all a tightwire and you never get to come down. You just get used to it, she said. You just move from wire to wire to wire.
