CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

Detective Emerson rolled over in his bed and squinted at the clock on the bedside table. He shot up when he saw it read nine twenty-five. Wrestling a shirt and a pair of pants off their hangers, he flew into the bathroom where he splashed his face with warm water. He dressed rapidly, applied cologne liberally, and sped out the door, running until he was behind the wheel of his black Crown Victoria. His cell phone rang six blocks from the office.

“Where are you?” McDonald asked when he answered the phone.

“Almost there. I must’ve forgotten to set the alarm. Anything new turn up?” Emerson asked, crossing two lanes of traffic to make a right hand turn.

“Looks like you have a voicemail. Maybe the drummer called you back last night.”

“Hopefully he can tell us something about our suspect. I’ll be there in a few minutes.” Emerson hung up and swung the sedan into a parking spot. When he reached his desk, McDonald was waiting for him, a fresh cup of coffee in her outstretched hand.

“Thanks.” Emerson took the cup and slurped at it. He listened to the voicemail and smiled.

“Yep, it was Matt. He said he could meet with us between ten and twelve.”

Emerson dialed Matt’s number and arranged to meet him in fifteen minutes at a coffee shop near the Mall at Millennia. He unlocked his drawers, retrieved the case file, made sure the photo was in it, and looked up at McDonald.

“Want to come along?” Emerson asked. He’d been a loner since his last partner had been killed two months ago, but knew eventually he’d have to take on a new partner. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to team up with McDonald. She seemed to have a level head and wasn’t jaded by the job yet.

McDonald eagerly nodded. She followed Emerson to the car and quietly slipped into the passenger seat.

“Why don’t you read this over on the way,” Emerson said, handing her the case file. “See if there’s anything I’ve missed.”

The young detective took the file, shuffling through the gruesome crime scene photos and statements provided by Amanda’s coworkers. When they reached the coffee shop, she trailed Emerson inside, both cops looking for a man fitting the description Michelle had provided.
