Chapter 6
While Jasmine was worrying about Luffy, her dog was thinking about her too, with significantly less affection.
Luffy loved Jasmine, but she had not been treating him like a proper partner at all during this case. Everything had been about Brandon and making sure he didn't think she was crazy. There had always been rules in place about when they could hold a proper conversation, but they had never been as restrictive as they had been lately. Usually, they would have plenty of time to talk about things as they walked from place to place, and Jasmine would make a point of finding a place and time to tell him about any vision she might have had. Now Luffy could barely get a word in edge-wiseâhe hadn't told Jasmine yet about the smell of blood or the footprint or the conversation he had overheard.
He had decided, after Jasmine had taken the turkey bone away from him, that he would not put up with it. He loved Jasmine, and he would still play fetch with her and walk her home and do everything an obedient dog would do, but he would not be her detective sidekick anymore. Not if she wasn't going to listen to him or give him enough credit.
Instead, Luffy was striking out on his own. He was going to prove to Jasmine that he had detective skills worth listening to by solving the case on his own. Maybe then Jasmine would let him work with her again in the way he had used to. He was sick of being treated like a passenger on the murder train.
The first place his investigation took him to was Brandy. Luffy knew that she was a widow, and that she didn't like him, but he was not going to let human traditions impede his investigation.
The problem was, Brandy was hard to find. He sniffed around all the trailers that he could find, even sneaking into some of them, but he couldn't find any trace of her. He remembered her mentioning someone named Danny in the phone call, but he had no way of knowing which of the people hanging around backstage were Daniel, or if it was even any of them at all. He couldn't ask around like Jasmine could, and even his sense of smell was pretty useless once he got too far away. He was losing hope when he got to the last of the trailers. He had saved it for last because the door was shut, and he didn't know if he could beg his way in or not. He was usually pretty good at getting humans to open doors for him, but the ones here had been giving him increasingly suspicious looks. There weren't a lot of dogs around to begin with, if there were any others at all, and he figured it wouldn't be too much longer before someone decided he had to be lost and dragged him back into the main carnival area. He figured that time, which had never been long, would shorten significantly if he made a fuss.
