Chapter Fifteen

Millicent fumed, “You can’t imagine how cross I felt and Mrs. Leeds is the one who is always going around saying she’s known Nanny Fulham the longest.”

Evie called for patience.

“Anyhow, not all is lost because, after we left her, we called on Mrs. Patterson.”

Evie encouraged her with a nod.

“Mrs. Patterson wanted to impress me. You see, word had spread about me asking questions and she wanted to let everyone know she knows Nanny Fulham better than anyone else. Anyhow, she remembered Nanny Fulham going on a trip. She didn’t tell anyone but Mrs. Patterson did some investigating. She happened to visit—”

Evie held her hand up. “Let’s call her Glenda. After all, that is her name.”

“Oh… is it? Yes, of course…” Millicent shrugged. “Where was I?”

“Mrs. Patterson visited Glenda.”

“Oh, yes,” Millicent nodded. “And she found Glenda quite busy although she wouldn’t say what she was doing, something Mrs. Patterson finds irksome because if you ask what someone is doing and they say they’re not doing anything, well… they’re obviously lying because you just found them in the middle of doing something. Determined, Mrs. Patterson sat down. Usually, she would have left the person to whatever they were doing but, in this instance, she wanted to know. If you ask me, Mrs. Patterson always wants to know what people are getting up to.”

“Millicent!” Evie urged.

“Glenda went to make a pot of tea and Mrs. Patterson happened to glance at a piece of paper sitting on a table. Of course, if you ask me, she snooped around until she found something worthy of her attention. Anyhow, the piece of paper had the name of this village underlined right alongside a date, which was the day after Mrs. Patterson went to visit her. As in, the next day. Mrs. Patterson decided Glenda was planning a trip somewhere. Well, as it happened, the next day Glenda left. Only, no one saw her leaving. Mrs. Patterson had planned on, in her words, bid her farewell, but she set her alarm clock wrong and missed Glenda’s departure by an hour. In any case, Mrs. Patterson is friendly with the fellow at the train station so she asked him and, to her surprise, he said Nanny Ful… I mean, Glenda, had taken the train that morning to Thornbridge and she’d carried a small suitcase.”

Evie sat on the edge of her bed and fought the temptation to cup her chin in her hand. She knew Millicent would eventually get to the point. Hopefully, she would lose track and just blurt out the news.

“Mrs. Patterson spent the day trying to join the dots. It made no sense because Glenda never went anywhere and suddenly there she was packing a suitcase and leaving. She scoured the local newspapers looking for news about Thornbridge and a possible reason for Glenda to visit. But she found nothing. Then, later in the day, her sister came visiting with her husband. They found Mrs. Patterson quite flustered by something so they asked her about it and she told them about Thornbridge.
