Chapter Twelve

I entered the alley behind the store, thinking of ways I could distract the tattoo guy from doing anything to me until Kade arrived. In the perfect world, Kade would have teleportation powers and he would have already been there and taken the guy out.

No such luck.

The guy stood, blocking my way from passing him. His shoulders were high and his hands were fisted at his sides.

“Release the girl and no harm will come to either of you.”

He thought Amelia was with me? That would have been a good idea, if I would have thought of it. Could I use that information to stall him?

“What do you want with her?” I asked.

“These affairs are not yours, human.”

Human? As far as I could tell, he was human too. Wasn’t he? My niece had ice powers, these guys had fire powers, and Kade could somehow hurt people telepathically; maybe there was a chance that these men weren’t human. But what did that make me? I was pretty sure both my parents were human, and Jenny too. Did our family have some weird supernatural genetics that I wasn’t privy to?

“She’s my family,” I said. “This is my affair.”

He started for me, a red glow coming from his hands.

I held my hands in front of me. “If you hurt me, I won’t tell you where she is.”

“If you don’t tell me where she is, I’ll burn this building to the ground.”

His expression was serious. I knew he wasn’t lying.

He continued to stalk towards me.

I lifted my eyes to the sky, hoping that Amelia would be safe and whatever he was about to do would be quick and painless.

Suddenly, the man cried out. I cringed, looking at him. In that split second, something pushed me to the ground hard enough so my legs gave out. My hands broke my fall and I winced in pain as something sharp pressed into my already burned hands.

A woman stood at the space where the man had been. She turned her head, her profile in shadow, but there was only one other person who’d be wearing the Jumping Bean apron at that moment. I couldn’t believe my eyes.

“Wendy?”

Her body appeared to shimmer. I fought to keep consciousness.

She came to my side and offered a hand to help me up. “I told you, I was supposed to be on break.”

I looked from her to the space where the man should have been.

“How did you—who are—how is this—” My thoughts stumbled off my tongue.

“Faye, listen to me. You need to go inside and act like everything is normal.”

I pointed to the otherwise empty alley. “Everything is not normal.”

Wendy rolled her eyes and gripped my arm. “I can explain more later. Right now I need you to get inside away from here.”

A tall, dark figure came into the alley from the street.

I yelped and hid behind Wendy. Not my finest moment. But as he came forward, I relaxed.

Kade.

“They’re stepping up their game,” Wendy said to Kade.

“You know each other?” I asked. It was obvious they did, since they both were in the habit of getting me out of trouble.
