CHAPTER 5

I couldn’t stop laughing. Sean was getting a little pissed off and that just amused me all the more.

“Just my luck,” Sean muttered. “I didn’t know she was armed.”

“This is Texas,” I said. “Even the school crossing guard is armed.”

“Very funny, Nicholas.” He made a face at me. “You missed your calling.”

We were standing in the middle of the Marshal’s office.

“I’ve got all this stupid paperwork to do now,” Sean mumbled. “How am I going to explain what happened?”

Trace walked by suddenly and looked at Sean. He shook his head sadly.

That cracked me up again.

Sean gave me a shove through the open door of an empty office. “You are in trouble.”

“God, I hope so.” I met his gaze, letting him know my intentions. Then I grinned. “You can’t do a damn thing to me here.”

“What’s going on in here?” Kieran poked his head in. He smiled at me and wagged his finger. “None of that now.”

“I’m not doing anything,” I protested. “Can I file a complaint?” I glanced at Sean and smirked.

He grunted. “Oh yeah, right.”

“Sexual harassment, eh?” Kieran pretended to muse. “I’ve forgotten which form that is. I’ve had to get tough with Jubilee about that.”

Sean and I were laughing.

“I’m sure you filed many of those forms you can’t find,” I joked.

“Tons and tons.” He nodded. “Didn’t do a bit of good. He’s still at it.” He sighed. “I’m powerless to stop him.” Kieran shook his head.

Sean muttered something like, “You’re both nutcases,” and pushed out of the room. “Got paperwork to do.” He grimaced.

Kieran raised an eyebrow at me. “Heard the woman he was supposed to be protecting shot herself in the foot?” He couldn’t keep a straight face and neither could I. We just cracked up.

Jubilee stood in the doorway now, watching the two of us having a laughing fit. “What’s going on?”

We couldn’t tell him. We were laughing too hard. Every time we said the word “foot” we were off again.

“Oh, that.” Jubilee grinned. He held up a rubber foot. “I got it for Sean. Gonna shoot a hole through it and throw some ketchup on it. I’m gonna put it on his desk.”

“Oh, he’s going to love that,” I replied, sputtering.

“How in the world did this woman shoot herself in the dang foot anyway?” Jubilee glanced from me to Kieran.

Kieran crossed his arms and looked down at the carpet a second. Then he glanced up and shrugged. “I guess she must have had shitty aim!”

The laughter began a new round.

It was actually our superior, Marshal Evans, who brought an abrupt end to it. “What is going on?” he demanded.

We all sobered like chastised children. Kieran desperately wanted to blame me for something. I saw that look in his eyes. He decided against it when I shot him a warning glance. Instead he issued Evans one of his most charming and elegant smiles, and said, “We were exchanging information on a case, sir.”

I cleared my throat, nodding vigorously as I checked the floor for some imagined object.
