Game 386B33

Alexander Areschenko

Jacek Stopa

San Marino 2006 (2)

1.e4 c5 2.♘f3 ♘c6 3.d4 cxd4 4.♘xd4 ♘f6 5.♘c3 e5 6.♘db5 d6 7.♗g5 a6 8.♘a3 b5 9.♗xf6

9.♘d5 ♗e7 10.♗xf6 ♗xf6 11.c3 0-0 12.♘c2 is another major branch of this variation.

9…gxf6 10.♘d5 f5 11.g3

11.♗d3 and 11.c3 are the two main moves here for White, but the continuation chosen in the game is not bad either.

11…♗g7 12.♗g2 fxe4 13.♗xe4

13…0-0?

Black’s kingside is severely lacking in defenders, while White is well prepared to start an onslaught, so castling kingside is erroneous, or at the very least premature.

The correct way to play is 13…♗e6 14.♕h5 ♖c8 15.c3 ♘e7, with a double-edged game.

14.♘e3 ♕c7 15.♕h5 h6

15…f5 16.♘xf5 ♗xf5 17.♗xf5 was a better option, but still highly unappetising.

16.g4!

A move to remember.

16…♖a7

16…♗e6 17.g5 f5 18.gxh6 fxe4 19.♖g1 is curtains.

The computer supports the view that the reckless 16…♘d4!? was Black’s best, although he is lost anyway.

17.g5 f5 18.gxf6 ♖xf6 19.♕e8+ ♖f8 20.♕xc6

Black resigned.
