DIAGRAM 122. Black to play

Diagram 122 shows another example. Though down a pawn, Black draws easily by playing for the position in the previous diagram. With 1...Nf5!, he forces White’s pawn to the unfortunate h7-square. White obliges: 2.h7 Nd4 3.Kd1 Nxc2! (3...Kg7 also draws, but Black wants to be dramatic) 4.Kxc2 Kg7 5.Kxc3 Kh8. Now White simply can’t win.

The moral of all these positions is simply this:

If you are ahead in material and you have an a- or h-pawn, be careful not to give your opponent a chance for a stalemate!
