CHAPTER 17

Ivy had given up on her attempted review of her case notes and journeyed into the kitchen to investigate potential snack options. She opened the refrigerator and pulled a sausage from the plate of leftovers on the top shelf. She waved at James as he ran towards the door, a waft of over sweet aftershave trailing behind him. Unsatisfied by the shrivelled sausage, she hunted through the badly organised pantry until she found an old Christmas biscuit tin. Having decided that its contents was best left untouched, she returned to her room to work on her notes.

She sat down on the unmade bed and pulled her laptop towards her. She had transcribed her day as recorded in her notebook, saved the files, and created a new folder for the case. Ivy checked her emails. There were the usual notifications from various retailers, an invitation to a school friend’s baby shower and one from her best friend, Mary, asking how she was settling in. She was going to check her social media but decided that she couldn’t bear the thought of seeing everyone out on the town. After twenty minutes of general procrastination, Ivy decided that a visit to the station may inspire her. The crime board needed updating, at the very least.

As she walked back through the kitchen, she put the rubbish into the bin and checked the empties. She'd had three beers in quick succession, but that was two hours ago, and she had eaten. A quick mental tally confirmed she was alright to drive. She could always use the breathalyser in the car if she was in doubt.

“Are you coming, girl?”

Attila's tail thumped against the floor.

Ivy went out to the car and opened the door. Attila jumped immediately into the front seat, but Ivy let it pass this time. She buckled up and drove down the road to the station house.

Ivy fumbled with the unfamiliar keys, finally using the light on the office mobile phone to locate the correct ones. Attila sniffed around the door, probably detecting the presence of an unseen Esme. She pushed open the door, felt around the frame for the lights and then attended to the alarm system. She inspected the various light switches and found one with a tag underneath which read “Police sign”. She flicked it on and looked out the door. Seeing that both the sign at the bottom of the drive and the one above the door were illuminated, she nodded to herself, making a mental note to keep those on when she moved into the station house.

Ivy went into the back room and looked over the two whiteboards that Jay had set up. He must have come back to the station sometime in the afternoon. He’d left a pile of photos of possible suspects sitting on the corner of the desk. Some of them were from the driver's licence database and others looked like they'd come from the poultry club webpage. He had made notes on each of the suspects.
