Chapter 14

As Silas and I head back to the bookshop, I attempt to reset my expectations to their normally low level. After losing my mother at such a young age and struggling through the foster system for more than six years, I tend to have a general suspicion of positive emotions. It’s not that I don’t enjoy being happy. Who wouldn’t? It’s just that in my experience the higher you let yourself climb the farther you end up falling. However, in spite of my internal red flags, I’m actually feeling pretty good about myself. I’m feeling confident in my choices.

I park the Jeep in the garage, and Silas and I walk down the alley. That is, until the heavy metal door of the building next to mine pops open, missing my face by a hair’s breadth.

“My apologies, Miss Moon!” Rory Bombay skillfully grasps my hand and prevents me from stumbling backward and almost certainly landing on my rear end in the muddy slush.

“Thank you. I’m pretty sure I would’ve been in a lot of trouble if I’d damaged this designer suit.”

Rory glances at Silas and back to me. “Isn’t it your suit? Do you have an overbearing valet?” He chuckles.

Silas steps forward and disengages my hand from Mr. Bombay’s before he replies. “I’m sure you’re familiar with Tanya. She’s not a dry cleaner to be trifled with.” He loops my arm through his elbow and gives me a meaningful tug. “Come on, Mitzy, we have business.”

Rory calls down the alley, ”Miss Moon, I was hoping I could take you to dinner in Grand Falls this evening.”

I glance over my shoulder as Silas hustles me between the brick buildings and call, “I had to skip breakfast, so let’s start with lunch and see what happens.”

“Perfect. There’s a lovely patisserie on 3rd Avenue. Why don’t you change into something less restrictive and I’ll meet you in front of the bookshop in half an hour?”

Just before Silas steers me around the corner, I shout, “It’s a date.”

“Mitzy, I thought your grandmother and I were quite clear about Mr. Bombay and his intentions.”

I untangle my arm and stop on the sidewalk.

Silas takes two more steps before he realizes I’m not going to budge.

In my best grown-up voice, I announce, “I will take your recommendations under advisement. But I’m old enough to make my own decisions. And let’s not forget I have more than the average sense of right and wrong.”

Silas turns and walks toward me on the sidewalk. “Those extra senses are exactly what your grandmother and I are endeavoring to protect.”

Now that sounded unduly ominous. But I refuse to give him the satisfaction of knowing that he got to me. “It’s just lunch, Silas. We’ll walk there, eat lunch, and walk back. I’m not getting in a car with him. I’m not spending the day with him. I’m not going away with him for the weekend. It’s just lunch.” Now that I think about it, the thought of going away with him for the weekend doesn’t sound terrible.
