Keys rattled. An oiled door opened, then shut. I sat bolt upright, and tried to leap to my feet. Only the floor lurched and I ended up on my arse.
Wil frowned down at me. He was as clean and fresh as I was disheveled. I spat, aiming for his shiny black boots. Dead on. But his chiseled face didnât show a reaction. It might as well have been cut from stone.
I glared up at him. A light in the hallway cast shadows over his freshly polished head. He wore a dark longcoat and a red-brocaded waistcoat with an open-collared shirt beneath. A cutlass hung from a wide belt, and his trousers were too fitted for pockets.
I leaned back into a corner. I hoped it looked casual, but really I needed the reassurance of two walls and a floor. âYouâre a bastard,â I said.
âIâm also a scoundrel.â
âWhereâs Mordecai?â I asked.
âHeâs safe.â
âI want to see him,â I demanded.
âMost prisoners grovel and beg for mercy.â
I summoned every fiber of my body that wasnât sick to the bone and met his amber eyes. âI wasnât the one gasping for air in the muck with a hole in his lung begging for help.â
A muscle in his jaw flexed. âI havenât forgotten. For all my ways, I am a man of my word and I believe I promised you masques.â
âSo I can buy my freedom from you. Is that it?â
âI need that contract,â he stated.
âShouldâve asked for it instead of assaulting us.â
âDonât push me, woman.â
âOr youâll what? Toss me off the nearest tower?â
Wil cocked his head. âDespite what you told me in the lift, I donât think youâve ever been to the Above.â
âWhy does that surprise you?â I shot back.
âYouâre sun-touched. But you have red eyes.â
âSo?â
âIâve never seen a red-eyed sun-touched before.â
I lifted a shoulder. âWhat of it?â
âYouâre a rarity.â
âLook here, Wee Willy, Iâm not inclined to be part of your harem.â Fine, all right, maybe Iâd read a few of Mordecaiâs romance novels.
He snorted. âIâm not inclined to keep one. And if I were, I wouldnât trust a woman like you in my harem. Youâd have the other women staging a takeover in under a day.â
I clicked my mouth shut. That was quite possibly one of the nicest compliments Iâd ever received.
âCan you stand?â he asked.
âOf course I can.â
He waited.
âWhy should I?â
âDo you want to see Mordecai?â
Keeping the wall firmly at my back, I pushed up with my legs, sliding up the wall. He held out a hand.
âWhat do you take me for?â I asked.
âA woman in need of support.â He made a beckoning gesture. He had large, calloused hands with a gold signet ring on his index finger. That hand was a good two steps away though. The bastard wasnât going to make this easy for me. The ground felt like it was heaving. I took one step, then another, and grasped his hand like a lifeline. His grip was like steel, and yet he gently drew me forward. I felt weak as a newborn calf.
