CHAPTER FIFTEEN

S

tanding in the hall, nervousness filled her as she watched Galahad’s large frame disappear, leaving her with a short, beady eyed servant. Alone, in the past. Of course, they couldn’t stay together. These people would never let that impropriety stand. But as she followed the servant, she wished he could be closer.

Opening a door, the man let her into a suite. They were lavish but not overtly so, full of marble and high ceiling, mirrors and soft green fabrics made the room both fit for royalty, but comfortable as well. Her trunk rested at the end of the bed, the inside filled with the finest clothing of the time. Pulling out an over dress, she slipped it on. The dress clung to her torso before flaring at the hips over the weird cage these people wore. She missed pants. A chuckle escaped her as she imagined walking around the castle in a pair of trousers. She’d kill someone from shock.

Busying herself, Morra perused the room and numerous bookcases, before selecting a padded chair and settling down.

She cracked open the spine of the book Marie had given her. By the time there was a knock on the door, she had a plan in mind. Galahad stood at the entrance in fancier clothes than usual and Morra couldn’t help the giggle, “I like your kitten heels.”

Pursed lips and a blank, unamused stare was all she got back.

“It is the fashion of the time.” He sized Morra up as she stepped towards him, adorned in her own mess of frills and lace. Sheer yellow fabric, coated in rose embroidery, draped delicately over her frame. Morra lifted her dress to show off her own pale yellow heels that matched the rest of her outfit perfectly.

After an approving nod, she tilted to her head and waited for Galahad to follow her. The balcony had a view of the gardens and she looked over them as she asked, “So, what did the king say?” She aimed at a nonchalant tone. Already she missed everyone back home, but there were things to be done here.

He sighed before replying as he ran a hand over his face. “Nostradamus isn’t around; he left a few days ago. We could be here for another week or two until he returns.”

Morra breathed out in relief, her shoulders slumping forward, before quickly trying to recover. “Is this normal? To be gone weeks at a time in the past.”

“It is not unusual. There have been many times I have been in the past for years,” Galahad explained, looking over the garden’s eyes, glossing over with memories. Shaking it off, he turned, offering his arm, “Ready for dinner?”

Brushing off the invisible lint on the dress, she nodded, letting him guide her through the windy halls. By the time they arrived at a grand staircase, Morra was out of breath, ready for bed. No endurance training could have prepared her for walking around in heels and a cage that they called a dress.

Her heart pounded as reality sank in, this was her entrance to high society.
