CHAPTER 21

Mesmers’ Work

“No, not opposites. Calm and Anger are somewhat harmonious, like tide and ebb, or a push and a consequent pull that work in the same system. But Calm and Care, on the other hand, are absolute adversaries, like Ocean and earth. You will find that Empaths and Mesmers, accordingly, are often at odds.“

—Session on The Circle, Lesson Eight, Part I

Earlier that morning, Glitter had split up from Keiran and the others. Hainoch and Cobald went to track Harbinger Nye, to study his habits and find an ideal spot to attack him outside the city. Keiran had insisted it was necessary. He said that murdering a figure of authority inside the walls would invoke such wrath that things would only worsen for the women of Olyanath.

Keiran himself went to follow his silly instincts. He decided that a Harbinger’s family was worth investigating, and had gone stalking the curious trio of witches that exited the Harbinger’s house.

Meanwhile, Glitter stayed behind. She was lurking across the street until Keiran merged with the crowd of the city. You’re so easily distracted, she thought as Keiran went out of sight. Spent a week looking for your old pal Trezoss, couldn’t find him, now you saunter off on another random quest.

Left alone, Glitter focused on her own objective: infiltrating Nye's house and learning about the man, his strengths, his weaknesses, his sleeping routine, anything that might help to Confuse him - plantify him - as she called it. This was classic Mesmers’ work, from way before the classification mixed with mastering Calm.

It used to be a glorious art of studying people and devising methods to mesmerize them – to deprive them of Senspiritic powers. The Irentians ruined it when they realized that Calm-shields did not prevent Confusing an enemy, nor getting Confused.

Those muckheads promoted teaching all Mesmers to master Calm, and as time passed, the definitions had blurred across all of Huravoth. Even in The Complete Auralogy they defined Mesmers with Calm as their prime power.

Glitter, however, dedicated herself to the original art. Analyzing the target before the battle could yield all sorts of useful details. An assassination without prior research suffered from a severe lack of finesse, flow, not to mention fun.

Veiled in a cloak she’d “borrowed” from a nearby tavern, Glitter strolled up to the door with the sun symbol on it.

“Old-fashioned, they said.” She smirked, tossing and catching the small key, which bore an identical sun symbol. “Pickpocketing is for children, they said.”

Such nonsense. That full-of-herself Fervorist girl had no clue that Glitter nicked the key from her pocket when they “accidentally” bumped into each other.

No surprise there. Arrogance often plagued people with power, and no one rivaled Fervorists in that aspect. It made them predictable. Their power blinded them to the fact that commoners - like street thieves - could easily outsmart them.

The key clicked and the door opened. Glitter entered the living room, her steps silent on the old, faded blue carpet. Two armchairs were facing a cozy hearth, and books - so many books - were laying on the shelves.
