Chapter Fourteen

All their visitors joined the hunt, except Celeste, which gave Rowan time to get to know her better. When they were awake, they played with Celeste’s daughters, Angelica and Briannin. They were adorable little cherubs that rarely fussed, smiling at whoever was holding them. They were more therapeutic than anything else could have been, making Rowan eager to hold her sons. The second day, they were going to walk into town, but the babies had shifted when she rose that morning. Celeste took one look at her and sent for Josian, who confirmed it. They had dropped and were in position. Josian said it would probably be another two or three days before labor started. She also suggested a soak in the hot springs would ease the discomfort and be good for her.

Celeste seconded that notion and they went out to the private springs in the garden. Rowan had to get in slowly, but the hot water was relaxing and it supported the weight in her middle, but her back still ached. There were stone ledges for sitting. She had thoughts of just staying here until it was time and Celeste laughed. They stayed in for a while, then reluctantly dressed and went back inside.

That afternoon, the tower guard alerted them the hunters were on their way back. She had Torvie make sure there were refreshments for everyone. Their visitors came in discussing the trip with enthusiasm. Rowan rose, with some difficulty, to greet everyone. Alvinar came straight to her, aware of her change in posture. He laid a hand on her abdomen and then smiled.

“It won’t be long at all now! Has Josian seen you?” His brows drew together.

“Yes, this morning and she thought it would be another two or three days. I’m fine. It’s just harder to walk with them in this position.”

Mam came over then, looking hard at her. “Sooner than that, I’d say. Alvinar, take her to the hot springs as soon as she has a little, just a little bit mind you, to eat – some meat, a little bread and a small glass of red wine. Rowan, you need nourishment, but only a little at a time. It may well be tonight, by the way you’re walking.”

Alvinar got her seated and left to return without his armor.

“I’d stay in that hot spring until all those muscles relax, if I were you,” Sorla said. Celeste and their mams shared a knowing look, but then, similar expressions were on the faces of their das.

Alvinar was soon helping her into the hot spring. She entered slowly, as she had before. Once they’d soaked for a few minutes, Alvinar had her straddle the seat that projected out and lean with her arms folded on the rim. He got behind her and began to massage out the knotted muscles. It was about perfectly placed for that and the water supported the babies. She could feel the muscles ease under his sure touch. Rowan thought she fell asleep for a few minutes, it felt so wonderful.
