At the hotel at Hakone Kase had said, “Let me see you,” and had suddenly clutched Mizue's breast with his hand. At that moment Mizue felt that some vital part of her was being taken from her. It was a feeling she had never known before. Just as she felt she might faint, Kase told her how he had realized her body was like the path in a tea garden.

“What do you mean?” asked Mizue when her mind had cleared a little.

“I mean the stepping stones of the garden path. In order to proceed along the path you have to step first to the right and then to the left, but you are always moving forward in a direct line. I have a feeling somehow that the gardens I build from now on will be shallow.”

“Will that be because you've known me?”

“Yes.”

“Are you sorry this happened?”

“No. Not at all. I'm grateful to you.”

“Why does everything seem so confusing when I'm with you?”

Mizue dozed on the train returning to Hadano. She missed her station and, awakening at Isehara, scrambled off the train and caught a taxi home. Until her husband returned that evening, she spent the rest of the day in a daze, uncertain whether she was awake or dreaming.
