AN EQUAL MARRIAGE : T ORREY AND NELSON. Torrey and Nelson have had an equal relationship from the very start. Even before they got married they started to think of all their money as “our money” and merged their finances into one account. Their solution to division of housework was that they did a lot of it together: They divided up the housecleaning and did it all on Saturday mornings, so they spent identical amounts of time on it. Nelson describes himself as more “food oriented” than Torrey, who can skip a meal and not notice it when she’s preoccupied with her work, so as a result he is the one who ended up taking responsibility for meal planning and shopping. But Torrey is the better cook, so she has done almost all the cooking. They are flexible about who cleans up after dinner, depending on who is less tired on a given night.

Torrey and Nelson have two children. Torrey took only a short maternity leave after each one before returning full-time to her job in commercial sales. From the beginning Torrey and Nelson have relied on live-in child-care help—including the occasional emergency grandmother. There have also been numerous occasions when, in the absence of a live-in or grandmother, one of them had to take full responsibility for the kids (and adjust their work schedule accordingly) when the other was away on a business trip.
