Take Ötzi, the 5,300-year-old mummy found by two German hikers on the border between Austria and Italy. When scientists examined the contents of his full stomach, they discovered what would have been Ötzi’s last meal before his death by arrow in the back—murder most foul! Spoiler: the meal wasn’t pizza. It was meat (ibex and red deer), einkorn wheat, and “traces of toxic bracken” (a type of fern). His diet was much higher in fat than scientists had expected it to be (relatable!). Because he didn’t have time to digest, Ötzi’s stomach was able to teach us wildly valuable things about life and diet 5,300 years ago. Perhaps someday your stuffed crust pizza and Flamin’ Hot Cheetos will do the same.
