Can everybody fit in a casket? What if they’re really tall?

Listen, sometimes people just don’t fit inside a casket. And funeral directors have to do something about it. It’s our job. The family is counting on us. If we are left with no other options, we will have to amputate their legs below the knee to make them fit.

No! What the heck? We don’t do that. Why does everyone think that’s what funeral homes do to tall people?

Sadly, this whole amputation rumor is not just an urban legend. In 2009, it actually happened in South Carolina. Our story begins with the death of a man who was six feet seven inches tall. Which is tall, but not that tall by casket standards (more on that later). His body was taken to Cave Funeral Home.

Here’s where things go from zero to “holy crap that’s macabre” very quick. The funeral home owner’s father would often do odd jobs around the funeral home, like clean and dress the bodies and place them in the casket. According to dear old dad, one day he made the executive decision to sever the gentleman’s legs at the calf with an electric saw and place the legs alongside him in the casket. They even went ahead and held a viewing where only the man’s head and torso were visible—for obvious reasons. It wasn’t until four years later, when a former employee came forward to reveal what he knew, that the man’s casket was exhumed. Surprise! There were his legs, still tucked up beside him.
