"A funny thing happened on my way to the office, you stupid motherfucker!" Danny yelled into his phone. "You need a police pass to get to the fucking door!"

"You better hang up and dial again," Lester said.

"What?"

"You forgot who the fuck you're talkin' to."

"No such luck, Lester. I know exactly what fool this is."

"Would you lighten up? I told you we were doin' this my way now."

"And I told you not to hit one if you didn't hit them both."

"One down, one to go. And he's the easy one."

"You're underestimating him."

"Am I? What's he ever done without Leon?"

"I'm afraid we're about to find out."

"Forget fuckin' Wiley. I'm on this, okay?"

"Oh, I feel so much better now."

"That's good," Lester said. "You know whatever makes you feel better is absolutely top priority with me."

"Forget the fucking sarcasm, Lester. Believe me, I don't have time to spar with you."

"Wiley's the one runnin' out of time. All you need to do is go home, change your fuckin' panties, and practice breathing in and out for a while."

"Gee, that's a great idea," Danny said. "That's exactly what I'm going to do." Except I'll do it out at the airport, he said to himself, on the far side of all those beautiful metal detectors. "Look," he said aloud, "forget that crap with Dexter tomorrow. I'll deal with him when I get back next weekend."

"You think he's gonna sit on his ass until he hears from you?"

"You can believe I'm not going to sit on mine. All of a sudden, I can't think of a single reason to wait until Thursday to leave for Hilo."

"Yesterday you were havin' fuckin' hot flashes about the counterfeits for the Hooker show. Now they can wait until Friday?"

"I'm glad you brought that up. I'm thinking maybe we should back off of that until things settle down around here."

"Whatever. I ain't the one with the cash-flow problem."

"You worry about Wiley. I'll worry about the cash."

"Just remember the two are related," Lester said, and Danny didn't much like the edge in his voice when he said it.

"Now whose panties are too tight? You'll get your damned money when I get back on Friday."

"That's right. One way or another."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"It means I'm not that motherfuckin' Dexter," Lester said. "I'm not even the bitch with the shotgun."

No, Danny thought, what you are is the stupid fool I'm going to leave here holding the bag. "Relax, Lester," he said. "Who knows who you are better than I do?"

"My problem ain't what you know, it's what you can talk yourself into when you can't remember everything you know."

"I haven't forgotten the first thing about you, Lester, believe me." Which is, Danny added to himself, you've got the brains of a brick wall.

"Where are you now?" Lester asked.

"I'm out at the airport," Danny said, even though the Caddy was pointed up the hill toward his mother's house as he spoke. "Why? You want to kiss me good-bye?"

"I can't believe there's a flight tonight."

"Probably not. But until you put Wiley down, I can't think of a better place to wait.
