Chapter ten

It was Saturday, so the gym was closed. That had been on her schedule for weeks, and didn’t change what Hannah did all that much. She started early, on her exercises, and pushed herself a bit, walking quickly, in her funny way, around a circle in her apartment, abusing the nice white carpet. It really was starting to show a track, even having had it cleaned in the last month.

A path worn into it by her new ways, leaving a mark, even if she wasn’t always so sure that doing the work was truly worth it, on a personal level.

After all, walking kind of quickly wasn’t exactly going to save her from being kidnapped. Not if the people after her were superhuman or, she had to admit, if they had a car, or maybe were just good in a sprint. That was why she was armed, of course. To buy herself a few moments to run away. If it would only work. It was hitting her pretty hard that the last time she’d shot anyone, the guy, the werewolf, had soaked every round and acted like nothing much was happening at all.

That she would have died, if no-one had bailed her out.

A thing that wasn’t really going to stop, any time soon. Not if she didn’t find a better way to live her life. She’d been trying to do that, of course. Exercising, eating, if not right, then at least a bit more and doing her weak little practice with psychic skills. A thing that she wasn’t giving up, even if she felt like her world was about to drop out from under her.

After sweating enough to be gross, stretching and then showering, she contemplated ruining her sleep schedule by actually resting in the middle of the day. She didn’t really have anything coming up that required her to be awake during daylight hours, after all.

She was considering that, feeling more than a little sorry for the plight of the little rich girl, when she heard a voice. Not coming from another room, or even behind her, no, this one was, familiarly enough, in her head.

~Hey, Hannah...~

“Something going on, Al? I can... Well, you know, same old, same old. I can find a person for you, which, face it, you can almost always do better than I can, or I can give you money. That one... You know, sure, if you need it?”

There was a slightly annoyed sense of things from the boy. The man, really. No-one who was forced to live in the heads of thousands of people at once was going to stay a child for long. He may well have had an even more messed up childhood than she’d had, given that. She locked that thought down, as quickly as possible. Not because it might not be true, but because it was far too close to sounding like a judgmental bitch, and she wasn’t going down that path in life. Even if she were useless, she wasn’t doing that.
