CHAPTER TEN

It only took minutes to get from the park to Gabe’s apartment building. Not a word was exchanged between them the entire way, just gentle brief touches and eager glances. Winnie could feel anticipation washing away the cares of the evening.

He parked his car in the underground parking garage and directed her to the elevator. In the elevator, Gabe took her in his arms and kissed her with one long, sensuous kiss the entire way up to his floor, which was near the top. When the elevator stopped and the doors parted, he took her hand and led her down the quiet hallway to a door marked with 1640.

The first thing Winnie noticed was the view. The apartment set-up itself was common, like many others she’d seen back in California. There was a large great room in the center with a decent size galley kitchen to the right and small carve out next to it for a dining table. She knew without asking that the master bedroom and bath would be in one direction from the front door and a second bedroom, perhaps even a tiny third bedroom, and a bath would be in the other direction. But the view was not common. It was a spectacular panoramic scene of the ocean and harbor. She looked down, just past the sliver of balcony, and readily spotted the cylinder colored lights lining the promenade where they’d just walked.

“Wow,” she said, impressed. “You were right, you do live close to the park.”

Gabe came up behind her and circled her waist with his strong arms. “When I bought this place, I had two choices. There was a much larger condo available several floors down that faced in the opposite direction. Or this one, which was also more expensive in spite of the size difference. But I couldn’t resist the view. I often sit in my chair and just stare at it. It’s very therapeutic, especially after a long day at the hospital.”

He indicated a black leather Eames lounge chair and matching ottoman that was currently turned toward the large flat screen TV anchored to the main wall. Hunter had a chair just like it in his den and claimed it was his favorite piece of furniture in his entire mansion. The rest of the furnishings in Gabe’s condo were also simple, modern and classy. The décor was definitely masculine but not hard or blunt. Most of the lines of the furniture were curved and of solid color, mostly in light neutrals except for the lounger. Wood tables and shelves were light. The color in the room came from the artwork and accents, all of which were tropical or island themed in bold bright colors and fabrics. A large patterned area rug covered most of the living room floor. Colorful pillows were artfully placed on the large L-shaped sofa, the only other seating besides the lounger and dining set. The back of the longest side of the sofa faced the front entrance providing definition to the room.
