Chapter Seven

Carly listened for a moment, certain she was hearing someone walking around in the living room. After getting out of bed to investigate, she came face-to-face with Josh outside her room.

“I realized I needed a clean shirt,” he told her. “Did I wake you?”

“No.” Carly’s head went from side to side. It was the only part of her that moved. “I wasn’t sleeping yet.”

He’d turned on one of the lamps and she could see his blue eyes slowly scan her body. “So you sleep in pajamas, huh?”

“Yes.” Carly glanced down at herself, taking in her totally unsexy brown-and-white pin-striped flannel pajamas. Why didn’t she own a nightgown? Why didn’t she own a sexy nightie?

“Well, I’ll just go get a shirt.” He started to walk around her, then his eyes met hers and he stopped in front of her.

She didn’t know how long they stayed like that with their eyes locked. She was suddenly very warm—unbelievably warm. Carly thought of her loose curly hair turning frizzy as it did when the humidity got high, but the thought didn’t remain in her head for long.

She made the first move. Leaning forward into a precision-perfect free fall, she flung her arms around his neck. All on her own, she kissed him. But she wasn’t on her own for very long. Before she could even feel any amazement at her unprecedented action, he was kissing her back and setting off sparks.

He brought her up closer, but there wasn’t any force involved. It was more a lazy kind of movement. His hands went to her hips. His chest came to her chest. His denim jacket was stiff against the soft fabric of her pajama top. Carly felt the instant he became fully aroused.

He removed his mouth from hers just long enough for them both to catch a breath, and then his lips were back again and this time his tongue moved wet and warm along her teeth. Given a turn, Carly placed her tongue to his teeth and then even more brazen than he’d been, she sought further access. She tasted beer and thought he might have had more to drink in the bunkhouse after he’d left her outside the cabin. She liked the way the beer tasted in his mouth.

“Whew,” he said when they broke apart again. “You’re good at this.”

Confidently Carly smiled. “Yes, but you’re better.”

“I’m really hot, Carly.”

“Why don’t you take your jacket off,” she said, and then realized that wasn’t what he’d meant.

He kidded her by pretending to consider her suggestion. Looking at her with the tease still in his eyes, he finally took off his jacket and let it fall from his hand. His eyes became suddenly serious. “I wasn’t looking for this to happen.”

She was going to say, “I was,” but she didn’t. After a convulsive gulp, she whispered, “I know.”

“We can stop right now,” he murmured, already flattening her body back against his.

“Don’t stop,” Carly said wantonly. “Please, don’t stop.”

She didn’t know how they got down on the carpet with him stretched over her.
