Eighteen

All Wednesday afternoon and then on Thursday I waited impatiently for Daniel to bring me the results of his tests on the knife, and to hear whether he had managed to locate the handsome Mario who had found the wallet. In the meantime I made sure I kept busy. Not that it was hard. I had some catching up to do on laundry and house cleaning, as well as finishing Bridie’s everyday dress. I decided not to show it to her until both dresses were finished. Having thought the party dress was something I could make at my leisure and show to her at some time in the future, I now had to race to have it finished for the party on Saturday. I realized as I spread out the fabric that I wasn’t used to working with something as fine and dainty. I’d better not prick my finger any more or every little drop of blood would show!

I worked until Bridie returned home on Thursday afternoon, then hid my sewing quickly away so that I didn’t spoil the surprise. We had heard nothing from Miss Van Woekem, so I had to assume that Rose was settling in well. I waited until Daniel was having a glass of whiskey alone in the parlor after dinner to ask about the knife.

He shook his head. “Plenty of fingerprints on it, and traces of blood, too. So we’ve got the right weapon.”

“But not Rose’s prints?”

“No. Apparently not.”

“Or the Englishman’s?”

“Not his, either.”

“Well, you said yourself that the murderer could well have been wearing gloves.”

“That appears to be the case. Any prints on the handle were well and truly smudged as if someone was wearing gloves. My men will be taking prints from kitchen workers and guards too, just to rule them out, but it doesn’t look as if we’re going to find out much more.”

“And the Italian man who was the guard?”

“In police custody, arrested for theft.”

“They found the wallet on him?”

“Not the wallet, but English bank notes, plus other items he had helped himself to from the baggage room. It seems his superiors had had their eye on him for a while.”

“But his fingerprints weren’t on the knife?”

“Not as far as we can tell. As I said, they were smudged. And I questioned him myself. He doesn’t fit the profile of a killer. Quite the opposite, in fact. An opportunist who would snatch an old lady’s purse but would run like mad if confronted.”

“So we’re none the wiser?”

Daniel sighed. “We are following up on other passengers on that boat. A few possible leads on people who moved in the right circles to be jewel thieves. We’ve asked Scotland Yard for a list of attendees at the party.”

“But that wouldn’t explain Ellis Island and why such a person would travel steerage. No more information yet on Edwin Cromer?”

He shook his head. “Scotland Yard doesn’t consider New York to be a high priority, I fear. They think we Yanks are a bunch of lawless nobodies and that murders here are ten a penny, I suspect.
