JOHN SPED into town and filled me in on the call. “The silent alarm was tripped, and there was no answer when the alarm company called.”

“Otto must not be there. Otherwise he would’ve called it in himself.”

“Exactly. Unless he was there and he’s been hurt.”

“Oh shit.”

When we pulled up at the harbor, John instructed me to stay by his side. I huffed but understood his reasoning. I was just a cadet, after all. After pulling out his gun, John entered Otto’s office, and I remained less than a foot behind him. The messy desk was perpetually cluttered, which made it impossible to tell if someone had rifled through the papers.

It became evident that something had happened, because a carpet had been pulled back to reveal a floor safe with an open door. John kneeled and peered in.

“Empty,” he whispered.

We then went down a hallway and checked two other rooms, one for storage and the second a bathroom. Farther back was Otto’s living quarters. It was basically a studio apartment with a small kitchenette. I’d expected the place to be as messy as the office, but it was actually immaculate. How it stayed clean considering Otto’s filthiness was a total mystery.

The only sign of disarray in the entire building was the open safe. However, no sign of Otto. That was rather odd because he was usually there pretty much all the time. The harbormaster couldn’t exactly keep banker’s hours since boats came in at different times.

John holstered his pistol, and we strode toward the exit. John stepped out, but before I followed, I noticed something on the wall that seemed odd. It was made of the fake wood paneling seen so often in the seventies, but one small section was a different color and didn’t match the rest of the wall. I ran my hand over the out-of-place segment and pushed in a couple places. The section popped open, revealing a set of stairs that led down to darkness.

Stupidly, I decided to check it out without telling John. At the bottom of the stairs, I found a light switch and flipped it on. The first thing I saw was Otto’s dead body on the floor. Blood oozed out of a hole in the side of his head, and his eyes stared sightlessly at me. I made a rookie mistake, and before making sure the room was empty, I dashed toward Otto’s body.

I checked for a pulse, then heard a noise coming from the shadows in a corner.

Oh shit! I’m a dead man.

Before I could move, a shot rang out, and pain exploded on the left side of my chest. I fell backward, and the shooter stood over me. I tried to focus on his face, but it was hard to ignore the pistol being aimed at me.

“Oh fuck!” the guy cursed before taking off.

Why didn’t he finish me off? was my last thought before passing out.
