The mischievous reporter had no intention of letting me know what was swirling in her brain. "I can't tell you all my secrets on the first date."

"I thought you didn't date cops?”

"This isn't a date-date. This is a breakfast date."

"That usually comes after the third date."

"We're doing things backwards." She grinned.

Backwards, forwards, it all seemed fun. I was happy to take it in whatever order it came. But if this was breakfast, I was looking forward to dessert.

When the plates were empty, she collected them and the silverware and brought them to the galley. She rinsed them off and stuck them in the washer. "I hate to eat and run, but I work for a living."

"Be careful out there. I don't think you're in any real danger. I’m pretty sure it’s me they’re after now. But keep your head about you."

"Aw, you’re concerned. That's so sweet." A thin smile curled on her lips.

"What can I say, I'm a caring kind of guy."

She scoffed.

"What!? I'm kind, generous, affectionate…”

She arched a skeptical eyebrow. “Can we schedule a time for the interview?"

"I still don't know what's in it for me."

A confident smile curled on her face. "I'll text you with the details later. Have a nice day, Deputy Wild."

She grabbed her things and sauntered out of the salon. I watched her hips sway as she trotted across the aft deck and traversed the gangway. Her heels clacked as she walked the dock to the parking lot.

I called JD. "You up?"

"I've been up since the ass-crack of dawn. I see your little adventure made the news. Did you make the reporter?"

"No."

"No?"

"She stayed on the boat last night. Purely for safety reasons."

"Right…”

I told him about my rash adventure at Rafael Peña's house.

"Didn't think that one through, did you?" JD muttered.

"It's all part of the plan. You know, rattle cages, see what happens."

"The last time you did that, people shot at us."

"What else is new?"

JD sighed.

"Look, I think we need to put pressure on Elias Barnes. He's obviously important enough to Peña’s operation to send assassins my way. He's protecting him for a reason. Elias is probably moving more than just eight-balls at the club. We pop that little bastard, and he may flip on Peña if he's facing 30 years to life."

"He knows the heat is on,” JD replied. “I’m sure he's being extra cautious."

"Everybody makes mistakes. We stay on him until he does."

"You really think Peña had Lacy Cougar killed over a drug debt?"

"He strikes me as the kind of guy that would kill somebody over a nickel."

"I talked to Daniels this morning. He says you're on administrative leave for a day."

"Nothing wrong with doing a little recon on my day off.”

"I'll swing by and pick you up in a bit."

I ended the call and headed down to my stateroom. I took a shower, got dressed, grabbed my pistol, and holstered it.

When I stepped in Diver Down, Alejandro was behind the bar, preparing for the day.

"Where's Teagan?" I asked.

"She's off today, remember? She went up to Miami for her grandmother's funeral.
