Chapter Twenty-Three

Ginevra

NO MATTER HOW HARD Ginevra struggled, the fae’s tight grip didn’t lessen across her mouth as they dragged her across the club, a glamour thick between them and the humans dancing and flirting with no idea of the danger passing through them.

Her magic was panicking too hard to be any help. Every time Ginevra thought she had a hold on it, her magic slipped away.

She reached along the bond for her dukes, but they were blocking her, too busy protecting her from one threat, they left her vulnerable to another.

But she wanted to help and prove she could handle herself.

This was her chance.

She just needed to figure out how.

Ginevra forced herself to breathe in and out, slow and steady, trying to calm her racing heartbeat and the fear filling her.

Her magic responded, settling inside her instead of lashing out blindly and missing.

She may have been terrible at physical combat, but hopefully her magic would save her like it had the last time she was attacked.

If she let them take her to another location, she was dead.

The fae in front kicked the door of the emergency exit open, whistling and stopping the alarm before it could begin.

Ginevra stilled in her kidnapper’s arms as he dragged her through the door, focusing her magic on his hands, humming low in her throat.

The fae hissed, dropping her immediately.

She landed on her hands and knees, the hum in her throat growing, morphing into a song.

One she didn’t remember, but her soul recognized.

A memory tugged at her, but she fought it off.

Now wasn’t the time for her to black out from a lost memory returning to her.

She sang it louder as she scrambled back to press against the side of the building, releasing the reins on her magic, letting it rip from her.

White light exploded from her chest, making her glow as her voice rose to a scream, shoving the fae away from her, sending them slamming to the ground where they curled up and covered their bleeding ears.

Ginevra rose, power pouring from her, her fury a live object, whipping through the air, daring them to touch her again, taking pleasure in their cries, in their pain.

Another voice joined hers, bringing Ginevra’s scream back to a more peaceful melody, one whose magic merged perfectly with hers.

A voice Ginevra knew almost as well as her own at this point.

Ginevra lost some of her rigidity, relaxing at having someone she trusted at her back.

Morgan.

Her knight had arrived.

The song rose and fell, perfect harmony weaving together, their magic combining with familiarity and ease.

The fae who dared try to take her remained curled on the ground, blood still leaking from their ears and their eyes.

A wolf, growling and furious, rounded the corner, snarling at the whimpering fae, four of Ginevra’s dukes following in the wolf’s wake.

Remus must have shifted.

Morgan moved to stand in front of Ginevra, glaring at Cade as he approached them with worried and furious eyes. “Who the fuck are you?”

In the chaos before, they hadn’t made introductions.
