Chapter Ten

I studied the cracks in the ceiling of my hotel room and tried to decompress. Oren had been kind enough to send room service, but I’d left it in the hallway untouched. I was too stressed to eat. Although the rescue mission had been successful, it wouldn’t be without consequences. My friends would be devastated when they learned the truth about themselves—about Pandora’s Pride. They had to be told, though. My father always said the right thing to do was usually the same as the hard thing and recent events proved him to be a wise man yet again.

Duncan Waite. Quinn Wendell.

Both my father.

A soft tapping at my window interrupted my thoughts and I knew without looking that Saxon was outside.

One glimpse of his face and it was clear he knew.

I opened the window and let him inside.

“Callie.” His expression was so pained that I started to cry.

He collapsed against me and I held onto him for dear life. “I’m so sorry. I wanted to tell you, but it didn’t seem right coming from me.”

He pressed his head against my chest, seemingly desperate for comfort. “I didn’t understand why you left…”

I lifted his chin to look at him. “And now you do?”

“I want you to know that I wasn’t a part of it. They kept us in the dark, too.”

“I know that.” I curled my fingers in his hair. “The elders kept it to themselves because they knew what everyone would think.”

He shifted to his full height forcing my gaze upward. I reached up to stroke his chiseled jaw.

“I wasn’t born this way,” he choked out. “They made me into something else.”

I fought against the swell of emotions that threatened to drown me. I’d had my time to fall apart. Right now, I needed to support Saxon and be a source of strength for him. He would’ve done the same for me if I’d let him.

“You’re perfect,” I said. I reached behind his shoulder to stroke the feathers of his wing. “Every last bit of you is perfect.”

I climbed on the bed and made room for him beside me. Wordlessly, he joined me and rested his cheek on my chest.

“They’re not who I thought they were,” he whispered. “Hell, I’m not even who I thought I was.”

I kissed him lightly on the lips. “You are, Saxon.”

“Do you mind if I stay here tonight?”

I gazed into his mismatched eyes. “Stay as long as you like. What about the others?”

He squeezed his eyes closed. “I don’t know. I stormed out first. I should’ve checked on them.”

I cupped his cheek in my hand. “No. You’re the team captain in the field, but not for this. You need to come to terms, too.”

“Is it true that you have every trait?” he asked, peering at me with curiosity.

“Apparently. I’ve been working my way through them.”

He seemed momentarily awestruck. “It explains so much.”

“It does.” I told him about my father and Nathaniel. About my conversation with Abra in the greenhouse and the importance of the Sunstone.
