Chapter 8

“Where are you meeting him?” Susan asked over the phone. She couldn’t believe that I was having dinner with Jackson.

To tell the truth, I couldn’t believe it either.

The cab I was in was heading over to Monroe Street. “The Hawthorn Building.”

Susan squealed, like a teenage girl going nuts over One Direction.

After she gasped and squealed again she demanded, “Ask him how he likes the building. See what the apartment looks like furnished… no, take pictures and text them to me!”

I rolled my eyes as the cab pulled up to let me off.

I got out of the cab and looked up at the skyscraper before me.

It wasn’t even in the top ten tallest buildings in Chicago, and Susan had only just begun her love of glass and steel buildings, but it did glow and twinkle with the setting sun.

“It might be hard to explain why I want to photograph his apartment.”

“You’ll have to be sneaky about it.”

Well, duh! “I’ll just snap some pictures of him naked after sex.”

Susan gasped. “You’re going to sleep with him on the first date?”

Oh yeah, I hadn’t told her…

“I already had sex with him last week.”

“WHAT!?!?”

“I’m here,” I said, stepping into the lobby. “I’ll call you later.”

I ended the call before she could pump me for more information and walked up to the front desk where a young man in a navy suit asked if he could help me. His eyes flicked over me, a slight frown turning the corners of his mouth.

“I’m here to see Jackson Burk.”

His frown softened, and then turned upside-down.

“Miss Hamilton? Mr. Burk is expecting you… I mean to say, please take the elevator to the top floor, the penthouse.”

The penthouse…

That had to have set him back a chunk of change.

As I stepped onto the elevator I started to wonder how wealthy Jackson was.

Millionaire, probably…

Billionaire?

I shook my head.

Nah…

The elevator sped to the top floor, not letting me explore the new questions that had invaded my brain.

Which was good—I didn’t need to think too much.

You mean, you don’t want to think too much about this, right?

Maybe I should…

The bell rang and the doors opened onto a twenty foot long hallway. All of it was inlaid with marble, even the walls, even the ceiling. There was a beautiful chandelier hanging about halfway down the hall, and the door was enameled mahogany with gold accents.

About ten feet in I stopped. Something was wrong.

I took another step and realized I was missing the click-clack of my heels.

Suck it up…

I started toward the door again, reached up to check my ponytail, and to make sure it wasn’t coming undone. Right before I made it to the door it opened and Jackson looked out at me.

He opened his mouth and then shut it with a click. His eyes scanned over me, up and down, left and right, and then finally up to my face again.

“You said to wear something comfortable.” I explained, relishing getting his goat.

He smiled and ruefully shook his head. “You look like you should be on the Disney Channel.
