Well, damn.

Navaya scrolled down the Microsoft Word page filled with all the words she’d transcribed from her notebook as soon as she got home. She got in a good little editing session as typed the hastily written words. Navaya reread the scenes about three times and she felt a bit flustered. That was the best sign in her line of work. The scene which featured agonizing beats of delayed lust between her main characters was easily one of the best she’d ever written. She smiled widely as relief washed over her. She hadn’t let on to anyone just how soul crushing it was to think she’d lost her spark. The anxiety was almost crippling when she worried she might never get that spark back. She pulled an unused notebook from the filing cabinet she kept fresh stationery in and sat down to flesh out the plot that formed in her mind when her phone rang. Navaya checked the caller ID before she answered.

“Hey, mama.”

“How are you, lovebug?” Kathleen asked. “Me and Raquel are on our way to the farmers market and I thought I’d check in on my favorite daughter.”

Navaya grinned. “You found yourself another daughter while I wasn’t looking?”

“Perhaps,” her mother teased. “How are you, dear? I see they haven’t been kind to you on the Internet.”

Navaya’s cheeks went hot. She and her mother had a very clear boundary. Kathleen wasn’t allowed to read anything she wrote. “Are you reading my stuff, mama?” she asked.

“No. A promise is a promise, but Xander told Raquel you were having a rough time.”

Navaya made a mental note to strangle Xander before she answered her mother. “I was in a little rut but I think it might be behind me now.”

“That’s good. I was going to recommend that you went and got yourself a massage. Massages always do me good.”

“I’ve been getting massages. Kind of,” Navaya said, happy her mother couldn’t see her smirk. Kathleen chattered for a few more minutes, passing the phone to Xander’s mother whenever she thought Raquel might do a better job at explaining something.

“What’s Xander up to?” her mother asked just as they started to wrap up the conversation.

“He’s at rehearsal or something,” Navaya said. “It might be easier to call him yourself. We’re not joined at the hip.”

Navaya expected her mother to comment about her sass, but Kathleen shocked her when she muttered. “Maybe you should be.”

Raquel’s giggle soon joined her mother’s laughter and Navaya realized she was on speakerphone.

“Stop being messy,” she heard Raquel say.

“It’s about time them two make us related for real,” her mother's muffled voice came through the phone. She obviously thought putting her hand over her mouth would be enough to prevent Navaya from hearing what she was saying. Navaya’s mouth dropped open.

“What did you just say?”

There was more giggling from Raquel and her mother, but neither of them answered her question. Navaya rolled her eyes heavenwards. She knew she should just ignore the statement her mother never intended her to hear in the first place.
