Chapter 13

For the rest of the day and into the evening, China was at her desk, going over every piece of material she could find, trying to determine how an incorrect procedure could have made it through all their safeguards. “Dammit.” She dropped her pencil and rubbed her eyes.

“Still coming up empty?” Joyce asked, entering the office carrying a brown bag and two drinks.

“Unfortunately, yes.”

“Well, let’s fortify ourselves before we take another crack at it.” Joyce handed China a cup. “Here’s a chocolate shake for you and strawberry for me.”

China took a long pull through her straw. “Hmm...delicious,” she said. “What did you get us to eat?”

“Hamburgers and fries from Jax’s, of course.” Joyce handed China a basket that held her medium-well burger and fries before taking a seat and pulling out her medium-rare one. “I can’t understand why people eat their meat well-done in any form.”

China smiled and took a big bite. “This is so good,” she said with her hand over her mouth.

“I’m just glad you can finally eat.”

“Me, too. I just hope it lasts,” she said, before taking another bite of her burger.

“So, where were we before I left to get dinner?” Joyce popped a fry into her mouth.

China wiped her lips. “We received the EPA’s specs on the proper disposal of gas cylinders.” She placed her right hand on a white binder that sat on the right side of her desk.

“And we submitted and received approval for our plans for implementing our disposal procedures based off those specs,” Joyce added.

“Yes.” China placed her left hand on a stack of documents that lay in front of her. “And we took those approved plans, entered them in our system and implemented the process.”

“Yet the plans we’re following today are incorrect. It’s as if the correct ones magically disappeared from the system, somehow.”

“Magically disappeared,” China murmured. “That’s it.” China pushed her half-eaten meal to the side and reached for a stack of files that had been placed in the center of her desk.

“What are you looking for, and are you done with that?” Joyce pointed at China’s food.

“Yes,” she said, laughing at Joyce, who had already reached for the burger before China got the reply out of her mouth. “I’m looking for Mr. Lee’s written log, because I remember seeing something.”

“His what?”

China reached for her shake and took a drink. “Mr. Lee keeps a log of every package that’s delivered to the mailroom for anyone on the executive team.”

“Why? Wait, I have a better question for you. He’s like one hundred years old—why is he still working here?” Joyce’s nose crinkled.

“Mr. Lee is seventy-five, actually, and he works because he wants to and not because he has to, trust me,” China informed her friend with raised eyebrows.

Joyce opened the lid of her cup and took a big gulp of her shake. “What does that mean?”

“Mr. Lee didn’t always work in the mailroom. According to Alexander, he handled special projects for Alexander Senior, and when he died, Mr. Lee was one of the first people to pledge his loyalty to Victoria when she took over as CEO.
