Chapter 11

The morning after our session with Lily was Merlin’s fifth birthday party. Oz asked in a text if he and his son, Liam, could come to the party. Oz had not stepped foot in my home for two and half years, yet we traipsed through my house, passing each other on the stairs as we were marauded by Merlin, Liam, and a dozen other kids playing tag. Our eyes would meet and we’d grin as we were pushed forward by the unruly band of five-year-olds. At one point we found each other elbow to elbow in a quiet corner.

“How is it going?” I asked.

“We are at a standoff,” Oz said.

After the party, I crawled into bed—exhausted and buzzed. I’d been averaging three maybe four hours of sleep a night for the past week. I could hardly eat. I felt a little like I was hovering above my body—ungrounded and watching myself as if I were in a dream. I fell into a deep sleep, and when I awoke two hours later the house was quiet. I reached for my cell phone. Oz had texted me two words:
