Delicately lifting the skirt up off my bed, I wrapped the seven layers of starched white fabric around my weary legs and placed the hat of fake apples, bananas and grapes onto my head. Thank goodness the glittery fruit was hollow – a turban of real fruit would have weighed heavily on my broken brain. I spread foundation over my entire face, highlighted my cheeks with bright blush and dazzled my eyelids with sparkles and mascara.

From under the fruit basket and behind the makeup, no one would be able to see the waves of stunted life, the restlessness and agitation gnawing at my head from the inside out. They would see what they wanted to see, and what I wanted them to see, the ruffles and glitter – the tacky and flashy costume that hid my reality, my disinterest, my wavering strength, my desire to get under the covers and go to bed.

Once decked out in festive gear, I checked my appearance in the full-length mirror. Who was under the costume anyway? The fun-loving attention-seeking Julie or someone who needed the night off? That’s all I needed, one night off from being who I was supposed to be. Just one night. The timing was off. Most nights I didn’t need to be much of anything to anyone – most nights, I could drift away into my alternate world of sleep. Not tonight.

I turned the doorknob slowly and stepped back into the limelight.

Slipping past Taylor, I caught his eyes for a second, painted a half-smile over my mouth and looked down, in quiet concession of my bad attitude in the bedroom. He came over and held my arm.

“I’m going to meet up with some friends at a bar to show them my costume. They aren’t going to the law school party.”

“Okay. Meet you at the party?”

“Great!” He seemed so happy, the cutting tone he’d used in the bedroom magically vaporized into thin air. A camera flash lit up the living room.
