Chapter 12
It took a little under half an hour for them to console Victoria, ensure that she wasnât going to talk to anyone else, clean her up, and send her on her merry way. When she finally did depart, her eyes were still red, but Casey assured Ashton that it wouldnât be remarked upon too much. If anything, her superiors would simply assume that she was treated exactly as theyâd intended. Theyâd briefly considered allowing her to stay in their room, but odds were extremely high that their quarters would be searched in their absence.
More and more, Ashton found himself closing his eyes and steadying his breathing. It was getting harder and harder to fight the urge to go to their luggage, unlock the trick compartment in the bottom, and arm himself to the teeth with the implements of death found there. Only his tenuous hold on the vague notion of a greater good kept him from going on a killing spree at the earliest convenience.
But it was good to get these bloody thoughts out of the way before the big event, he reasoned. Better to come to terms with them before he actually had to face down however many sick bastards he was going to have to smile at tonight. And sick bitches, he conceded. If last night had told him anything, it was that women could be just as reprehensible when it came to trafficking in human flesh.

It was enough to make his blood run hot, and he had to avert his gaze so as to not raise her ire.
âWhat is it?â she grumbled as he paced across the room once more.
Ashton glanced back at her. He meant it to be nothing more than a quirk of an eyebrow, but the vexation lining her face did terrible things to his core. She looked so imperious, sitting in her chair with a painfully straight back and watching him without turning her head. He knew in his head that it was just a matter of getting into character for the evening, but his other head was of a very different opinion.
He had to flex his hands just to distract himself, but that also drew her attention as well. Maybe it was just his imagination, but he thought he saw her pupils dilate fractionally as she looked at those tensing fingers. What was she thinking of at this moment? Him gripping her tightly? Her wrists, her waist, or something a little more vulnerable?
Ashton stepped closer to her, purely by instinct alone. Her lips parted ever so slightly, and she tilted her head back just enough that he knew his mind wasnât playing tricks on him. Looking down at her,
