Chapter 12

“YOU SEEM AWFULLY CLOSE to your boss,” I said, refusing to take the hint that Deidra wanted us to leave.

“What if I am? What’s your point?” she asked, the chip on her shoulder showing clearly.

“Why did Vance Wilkerson believe that Emerson was the reason his marriage broke up?” Grace asked her gently. “Were she and your boss having an affair?”

“That? It was nothing,” Deidra said. “In fact, most of it was in Jenny’s mind.”

At that moment, a well-built blonde wearing a short skirt and a tight blouse, clutching a bouquet of flowers, turned the corner and started toward us. It was clear that she was there to see Emerson. The moment she spotted Deidra, she hissed, “What are you doing here? He fired you, remember?”

Deidra looked as though the other woman had slapped her face. “He didn’t mean it, Jenny!”

“I heard him. Believe me. He meant it,” Jenny Wilkerson answered with a snap in her voice. She turned her attention to Grace and me. “Beat it, ladies. He’s mine.”

“As honored and thrilled as we are to be mistaken for your competition,” I told her, “we’re both married.”

“Big deal. So am I,” Jenny said.

“Okay, then we love our husbands,” I countered.

She just shrugged. “You’ve got me there.” Jenny then turned back to Deidra. “What are you still doing here?”

“I’m Emerson’s emergency contact,” she said proudly. “I’m not going anywhere.”

“Just because your name’s on a form doesn’t mean he’s yours. That’s paperwork, not love.”

“Do you honestly think that he loves you?” Deidra asked her loudly. “If you do, then you’re delusional.”

“I’m delusional? You’re nothing but a walking cliché. The secretary never ends up with her boss, no matter how many romantic comedies say otherwise.”

“You can’t see him!” Deidra snapped, and I saw more of the fire Gabby had warned me about. Wow, if Deidra was a force to be reckoned with, what must Jenny be if she managed to intimidate the bully?

“Try to stop me. I dare you.”

As Jenny walked forward, Deidra knocked the flowers out of her hand and positioned herself in front of the closed door. “Bring it, witch.”

“Should we do something?” I asked Grace as the two women started to face off.

“I know we don’t have popcorn, but I still want to see the show,” my best friend said. “I know Jenny looks tough, but I’ll bet ten bucks on Deidra. Care to take that bet?”

“I’m not betting on either one of them,” I said.

Grace was about to reply when a security guard came around the same corner Jenny had just traversed earlier. “What’s going on here?”

“Beat it, buster,” Jenny told him. “This is none of your business.”

“The name’s Macy, and you’d better believe that it’s my business. You both need to leave.”

“I’d love to see you try to make me,” Jenny replied, taking her gaze off of Deidra for a second.

That turned out to be a mistake. Much to all of our surprise, Deidra launched herself at Jenny, knocking her to the floor and falling on top of her as she fell as well.
