Rise and Fall of Frank P. Glazier
Frank P. Glazier of Chelsea rose to the pinnacle of political success in the state of Michigan only to fall to the very bottom of failure. When at the top, he held the office of treasurer of the state of Michigan, with his eyes fixed on the office of governor. Instead of holding the governorâs office, Glazier would occupy a prison cell.
Frank Porter Glazier was born in Jackson, Michigan, on March 8, 1862, the son of George Pickering Glazier and Emily J. (Stimson) Glazer. The family moved to Chelsea, where Frank attended the public schools. He continued his education at Michigan State University, graduating in 1880 from the pharmaceutical department. He completed a course at the Eastman National Business College of Poughkeepsie, New York, graduating with the class of 1881. Glazier married Henrietta Geddes of Chelsea on December 30, 1880. The couple traveled in Germany for six months, visiting many points of historic, modern and scenic interest.
When the couple returned to Chelsea in November, Glazier purchased the drugstore of his father and continued the successful enterprise until 1890, when he sold the business. That year, Glazier turned his interest to the manufacture of oil stoves. The Glazier Strong Stove Company made three-burner kerosene stoves for cooking and heating. After two years, he purchased the interests of the others in the business. In 1901, the business was incorporated under the name of the Glazier Stove Company with Frank as president and general manager. The company employed some 150 to 200 and claimed to produce the âbrightest and bestâ oil and gas stoves that were sold throughout the country.
