Harmony
I’d called Jessica on my way home and filled her in on everything that happened. After assuring her that I wouldn’t be struck down by some freak lightning strike and telling her my plan, she’d agreed to come over tonight and help me.
I’ve drawn a large chalk circle in the middle of my living room, leaving it unfinished for now so I can close it behind me, and just inside that one, I’ve started a slightly smaller salt circle, just in case.
A quick knock sounds on my front door before Jessica walks in, “Harmony, it’s just me!” She shouts the greeting, glancing to her right where my bedroom is.
I chuckle, “I’m right here, and I saw you walk in.”
She swivels to face me, looking me up in down as I stand at the counter, stirring the tea I’m going to drink to help protect me in the void.
“You look calmer than I expected.” She says, “You didn’t take anything did you?”
I roll my eyes, “Of course I didn’t take anything. I’m drinking some tea. I’ve offered gifts to the goddess, and everything else is prepared and ready in the living room.”
“Are you sure about this, Harmony? This seems dangerous.” Jessica plants her hands on her hips, her lips pursed.
“I’m sure. I’ve looked over the spell, I’ve taken extra precautions, you’re here as well. I have to try to save him. If I can pull him out of the shadow realm it will give him a fighting chance against Meredia.”
“You don’t know if that’s true or not though. And he admitted to trying to kill you.”
“You didn’t see the look in his eyes, Jessica. He’s being forced to do this. It’s not his choice.” I lift the mug to my lips and chug down the tea, letting the liquid warm my belly and fortify my resolve. “I’m doing this, and I’d like your help. So are you in?”
“I’m in. Let’s get this over with so you don’t have to deal with this anymore.”
We head into the living room, and step into the first circle. I close it behind us and the energy in the room pulses.
“Step into this one. You can sit next to me.” She perches on the table inside the salt circle, and I complete it around us, sprinkling the white crystals on the floor. “I’ve got bottles of water on the table if you need them to break the circle, but please, give me the chance to do this before pulling me out.”
“I’ll let you try, Harmony. But I’m not going to let you die for this guy.” She raises a brow, “Got it?”
“Fair enough. Let’s get started.”
I draw the sigils needed to enter the realm and lay down on my back, hands at my side, palms pressed into the cool wood. I meet Jessica’s stare and nod before speaking the incantation that will pull me under.
The darkness is suffocating as I drop into it, taking a few moments to get my bearings. I take a few steps forward, my arms stretched out in front of me so I don’t run face first into something.
