I haven’t always been tolerant of the monkey wrenches that life has tossed into my well-planned travel itineraries. But I’ve learned that obstacles can lead to invaluable experiences. Such was the case on the winter day when Venice was socked in with heavy fog, closing the airport and forcing upon me an overnight stay. I was no stranger to the charms of the “Adriatic Queen,” but here was the gift of unscheduled time to explore the labyrinth of quiet back alleyways cloaked in mist. As I roamed, I could hear the muted sounds of gondolieri calling out to one another. I followed the sounds to the back door of the Squero di San Trovaso, the oldest of the city’s few remaining boatyards where gondolas are made and repaired. The door was ajar, and I stepped inside. Amid the smell of freshly lacquered wood and the banter of the workers in Venetian dialect that few outside the city can understand, I stood and watched the creation of a new gondola, one of just a few still made there. The sun came out the next day, and I left Venice so grateful to have witnessed a disappearing corner of the “City Built on Water.”
