Anima and Myuke had gotten the fried pumpkin down very quickly, but the pork and beans had proven to be way above their skill level. Camilla had had to walk them through every single step, so it had taken them a while to finish making it. On the upside, though, it had tasted great, and theyâd even been offered to take home the leftovers despite Camilla having provided the ingredients. She really was like a saint, and while Anima understood that she felt indebted to him, he was going to make it a point to get her a small token of his thanks to give to her at their next lesson.
âSee you in two days!â Camilla called out to them as they headed out the door.
The sun was already partially hidden below the horizon by the time they left. They had to make it home quickly to avoid letting the laundry go damp and the girls go hungry for the night. They put the food in their basket, said their goodbyes, and started their walk home.
âI gotta say, this knife is super sharp!â
âYou picked a great one for sure, but your tools are only partially responsible for your success. It takes a good bit of skill to cut such perfect cubes of pumpkin.â
âI canât wait to make all kinds of food with this!â
âIâll work hard to keep up with you.â
They continued their idle chit-chat until they made it back home.
âWelcome home, Anima, Myuke.â
Luina came to greet them as they entered the warm dining room. Marie and Bram were both lying down on the table, but while Marie bolted upright the second she heard Luinaâs greeting, Bram didnât even budge. She glanced at the two and acknowledged them with the tiniest of nods.
âWelcome back, mâkay?â she mumbled. Playing with Marie all day seemed to have taken a lot out of her.
âI dawed a pishure!â
Anima put the basket down on the table and looked at the picture Marie proudly presented to him. It was a drawing of them eating sweets at the town plaza.
âItâs beautiful; well done! Hmm, based on the pattern, are those waffles weâre eating?â
âUh-huh! I like wapples!â
âDo you? Okay then, weâll have some once the weather gets warmer.â
âYaaay! Then, then, I payed tag with Brum!â
âOh, really? Did you have fun?â
âUh-huh! I winned!â
âWow, you won against Bram? Thatâs incredible; you must have a real talent for tag! Ah, I know! Do you want to play tag with me tomorrow?â
âI dooo!â
Marie instantly became so excited that she started running around in circles. She hadnât gotten to play with Anima at all that day, and Anima fully intended to make up for it the next. While she was busy celebrating, Bram suddenly perked up.
âSomething smells awesome, mâkay?â
âDaddy and I made fried pumpkin and pork and beans today!â Myuke explained as she proudly turned toward Bram. She had clearly been waiting for someone to make a comment. âItâs gonna blow your minds! It was sooo hard not to eat it all before we
