94: Why did the romans wear togas?

In the days of the Roman empire, most Roman men wore garments that consisted of a tunic of knee-length material, fastened with a belt. Over the tunic was then worn a toga, which consisted of a long sash of cloth draped over the left shoulder and folded in a specific manner.

While tunics were worn as everyday clothes, togas were classed as being formal attire, similar to the modern-day suit, and were worn on special occasions.

Togas were a sign of citizenship in Rome; outsiders weren’t permitted to wear them. Originally worn at all times, later in the Roman empire they were generally worn only at official functions as a mark of status. They also came in different colors to indicate the rank and position of their wearer, plain togas being worn by the lower classes and brightly colored, ornate togas symbolizing power, wealth and status.

It is thought that the term ‘purple patch’, referring to a period of wealth and prosperity, is derived from the attire of Roman noblemen, who wore purple togas and were provided with everything they wanted.
