Chapter 12
‘Hi, yes, I’d like to speak to Officer Dick Creuzinger of the Landeskriminalamt Special, er, Children’s Victim Unit … thing.’ I had been trying to use my most official voice and soften my accent as much as possible as I spoke down the line. Scrunching my eyes up, I tried not to make myself too aware of how much of an idiot I sounded. I shifted the phone to balance between my shoulder and ear as I tried to spread avocado on a piece of toast.
‘I’m sorry, he’s away from his desk at the moment.’
‘Oh, uh, right,’ I said, fumbling to get my mind back on track.
‘Can you please leave a message for him saying that Tommi Grayson called?’ The woman assured me she would as I left my number and we hung up.
Lorcan had been working on a laptop over on the couch and he lifted his head up when I finished on the phone.
‘How long until he calls back, do you think?’ I asked as I bit into my toast and deflated with pleasure as the soft, delicious taste entered my mouth.
‘Not long,’ shrugged Lorcan. ‘Even amid an investigation like this one, you leave an impression on people.’
I narrowed my eyes at Lo to ascertain his true meaning. ‘When you said “feminine wiles” yesterday –’
Lorcan interrupted me quickly. ‘I did not say “feminine wiles”. That was Clay.’
I took another bite of toast, quietly pleased with how strongly he was opposed to the idea.
‘Just get him talking about the case and feel your way from there.’ He quickly added, ‘Feel with intuition.’
Our plan of attack was simple: we were going to try and learn as much as we could until we heard from the powers that be about a course of action. Neither the Treize or Praetorian Guard had responded with follow-up movements besides the twins’ deployment and a representative headed our way.
Lorcan had already spoken to Jakea and Jaira during their travels to keep them abreast of the situation and said they were ‘extremely disturbed’. He seemed to be making a point of keeping me updated on every person he called, what they said, who they were and the outcome. I gave feedback and made suggestions, we argued or agreed, and we moved on to the next stages of the plan.
Lorcan and I split up later in the afternoon when I returned to the shooting range with Clay and worked again with the Glock and Beretta, then sniped with Yu.
Dolly and Sanjay were also at Yu’s and the five of us practised hand-to-hand combat before I had some one-on-one sensory training. We utilised the surrounding woods and Sanjay had me attempt to track Clay as quickly and quietly as I could. The Laignach Faelad had everyone wanting to step up their game.
I returned home to find Lorcan and Zillia poring over piles and piles of books. Er, not books exactly. Some of them were definitely books. A lot of them were pages held together with a variety of archaic bindings.
