Chapter 12

Close to two hundred bodies were packed into Eggs and Ham. It wasn’t a particularly large venue, which suited the owner just fine. Even when the crowd was small the place looked busy. Not quite as busy as tonight though. Smokers mingled on the front stairs that led down to the basement venue. Inside, people bumped and moved against each other as the DJ started playing a heavy bass track. Tables were scattered around the venue with small groups gathered at them, laughing and chatting. Against the wall was a long, black bar and punters shouted their orders to the bartenders whose hands moved in a blur, pouring, mixing and grabbing drinks.

At the far end in a shadowy corner sat a tall stranger. He was wearing a snug black T-shirt with a weathered leather jacket over the top. Denim jeans led to a pair of black boots and, as he moved in his seat, a loaded knife sheath strapped to his ankle was visible to anyone looking. They weren’t. For those that bothered to glance his way the attention went straight to his face and shoulder-length brown hair, which was tucked behind his ears. He was attractive: the longing looks from surrounding females were testament to that.

He wasn’t paying attention to them. His gaze was firmly focused on a young woman at the edge of the dance floor. She was dancing with a small group of people and her movements seemed to enthral him. Black combat boots were laced up over a pair of acid wash jeans, which hugged her body. She wore a loose-fitting silver top that appeared to be a mesh of some sort and fell in cords to just above her thighs. It wasn’t completely see-through but enough so that you could glimpse her blue bra and a tattoo underneath. Electric-blue hair was tied in bun at the top of her head and loose strands curled at the base of her neck and around her face. Tiny black skulls dangled off her earrings and they flew outwards as she spun around on the spot laughing at something a companion said. The man was nursing a whisky, which didn’t look like it had been touched, as he sat there, still and staring. The hunger in his eyes was unmistakable to anyone who had experienced the sensation of more than mere desire.

‘What’s your name?’ came the sultry voice of a buxom redhead who had sidled up beside him.

He hadn’t noticed her approach and looked at her now. She oozed sex appeal and was the only female game enough to approach him so far. The eyes of other curious women darted over. If she was successful, they would be kicking themselves all night.

‘Lorcan,’ he replied flatly, before returning his gaze to the blue-haired woman.

‘Lorcan. Exotic name. I’m kind of exotic myself. My name’s Jada,’ she purred.

He took a sip of his drink and ignored her.

Undeterred, she placed a hand on his shoulder and said, ‘Buy me a drink?’

‘No,’ he said in a matter-of-fact tone.
