Score One for Grandma and Grandpa

Personal conflicts between parents and children have a detrimental impact on the relationship between grandparents and their children’s offspring. The good news is every state has provided a way for grandparents to petition for contact with their grandchildren, although there are wide-ranging differences among the individual state statutes.

“The network of state-specific laws probably worked fairly well for years, when families tended to inhabit small geographical areas. It doesn’t work so well now, when families can be scattered across the nation,” writes Susan Adcox, grandparent expert at Grandparents-About (http://grandparents.about.com). “This means that grandparents in search of information must conduct state-specific searches, after determining which state has jurisdiction. (It’s usually the state in which the grandchildren reside.)” Type “visitation rights by state” into the Grandparents-About website search engine to locate specific states. The website also offers invaluable insights on what is meant by “grandparent rights” and steps to take to avoid court proceedings.

Also, check out Alienated Grandparents Anonymous Incorporated (http://www.aga-fl .org). This organization provides support and information, and helps validate the feelings of those suffering some degree of estrangement, alienation, or isolation.
